SignSupport is an mobile app that effectively translates text to sign language. Michael Motlhabi and his team, along with researchers from University of the Western Cape and South African-Netherlands Research Programme on Alternatives in Development, created the new technology.

Many Deaf people have low written/spoken language literacy thus reading, writing and lip-reading are not options for them. A particular area of concern is in prescribing medication. It is unlikely that a pharmacist would know sign language in order to explain how to properly take medication. Many pharmacists simply give instructions and hope that patients can understand them from reading lips and gestures.

There are plans for the app, currently available in Android, to expand nation-wide and globally.
